Women Build Week

National Women Build Week is May 5-13, 2012!

An initiative of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program, the fifth annual National Women Build Week, sponsored by Lowe’s, challenges women to devote at least one day between May 5 – 13 to the effort of creating affordable housing.

Women have the capability and determination necessary to build Habitat for Humanity houses, addressing the problem of substandard housing in a concrete way so that families have safe, decent, healthy and affordable homes.

Schedule of Events

Lowe’s Women Build Clinic
April 28
In prepartation for National Women Build Week, Lowe’s of Lacamas Lakes will be hosting a Women Build clinic.  This free clinic is open to any one who is interested in joining the Women Build project.  It will take place at Lowe’s of Lacamas Lakes (18801 Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard, Vancouver) at 12pm.

Lowe’s Clinic Reunion Days:
May 5 and May 8
These two days are dedicated to uniting past and future Lowe’s Women Build Clinic volunteers as we continue our Women Build project.  Come out and show off all the skills we learned at the clinics on the build site.

Women of Service Build Day:
May 10
Do you work for government agency, the military or work for a police, firefighting or other “Service” related industry? Then this day is just for you!  Come out and join us for a day of fun, sun (hopefully) and building.

Rosie the Riveter Build Day:
May 11
Rosie the Riveter is a Culteral icon of the United States, representing the American women who worked in factories during World War II, many of whom produced war supplies and replaced male workers who were in the military. As our spokes model, she represents the strength, empowerment, and motivation behind Women Build. On this day, dress in a work shirt, throw on your favorite bandana and receive a FREE Women Build nail apron. Come join us as we show the world, “we can do it!”

Mother/Daughter Build Day:
May 12
Sunday, May 13th is Mother’s Day… want to do something unique with your Mother/Daughter this year?  How about joining Evergreen Habitat for Humanity for our Mother/Daughter Build Day on May 12th?  What better way to celebrate this special day than by spending it with your mother, working with us to help our Clark County families!

Space is very limited for this special build day, you must preregister and all participants must be 16 and older.  We will be offering 2 shifts with one being from 8am – 12pm and the other from 12pm – 4pm.

Mother/Daughter Build Project:
May 12
Lowe’s of Lacamas Lakes is hosting a special build project for Mothers and Daughters.  Work together to build a planter box while practicing building skills.  This project is open to Mother/Daughter teams 5 and older.  This FREE activity will take place at the Lowe’s of Lacamas Lakes (18801 Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard, Vancouver) at 9am.

General Information for Habitat Build Days

All new volunteers must complete the online orientation before signing up for a build shift.

You do not need any previous construction experience to work on the build site.  We provide the training you will need.

We do provide the tools but if you have work gloves it is a good idea to bring them.  You can also bring your tool belt, hammer, tape measure, nail apron, eye protection/sun glasses, earplugs, utility knife, rain gear and sun block.

We work rain or shine so please come dressed appropriately for the weather.  Wear sturdy shoes appropriate for a construction site and clothes you won’t mind tearing or staining.

Unless otherwise specified, we do not provide lunch but we do try to have water available on the build site.  Make sure you bring your lunch with you.

To RSVP for the special build days, or if you have questions please call Melissa Carson, VISTA Volunteer Coordinator, at the office at 360-737-1759.
